Azam Khan, born on 14
August 1948, is a prominent Indian politician from the state of Uttar Pradesh.
He is the founder and president of the Samajwadi Party, a political party in
Uttar Pradesh, India. Azam Khan has been a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA)
for eight terms and a Member of Parliament (MP) for two terms. He is known for
his controversial statements and actions, as well as his strong influence in
the politics of Uttar Pradesh.
Early Life and Education
Azam Khan
was born in Rampur, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India. His father was a
lawyer and a freedom fighter, and his mother was a homemaker. Azam Khan was the
fourth of eight children in his family. He attended the local government school
and later went to Aligarh Muslim University to pursue his higher education.
During his time at Aligarh Muslim University, Azam Khan became involved in student
politics and was elected as the president of the Students' Union. He was also
actively involved in the anti-Emergency movement led by Jayaprakash Narayan in
the 1970s.
Political Career
Azam Khan started his political career in 1980 when he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh
Legislative Assembly as a member of the Indian National Congress (INC). In
1984, he won his second term as an MLA from Rampur, but this time as a member
of the Lok Dal party. In 1985, he became a member of the Janata Party and was
appointed as the Minister of State for Energy in the Uttar Pradesh government.
In 1989,Azam Khan was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Rampur constituency as a member
of the Janata Dal party. He was re-elected as an MP from Rampur in 1991. In
1993, he joined the Samajwadi Party, a political party founded by Mulayam Singh
Yadav, and became one of its prominent leaders.
Azam Khan won his third term as an MLA from Rampur in 1993, and since then, he has been
elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in every election. He has won
eight consecutive terms as an MLA from Rampur constituency.
Controversies
Azam Khan is known for his controversial statements and actions. In 2019, he made
headlines when he made derogatory remarks against BJP leader Jaya Prada, who
was contesting against him in the Lok Sabha elections. He was widely criticized
for his comments, and the Election Commission of India banned him from
campaigning for 72 hours.
In 2018, he was embroiled in another controversy when he made comments against the
Indian Army, accusing them of rape and murder. His comments were widely
condemned, and he was criticized by people from all walks of life.
In 2019, Azam Khan was also accused of land grabbing by a local farmer in Rampur. The
farmer alleged that Azam Khan had illegally occupied his land and built a
luxury resort on it. The matter is still under investigation.
In 2016, he was also accused of making derogatory comments against the then-Speaker of
the Lok Sabha, Sumitra Mahajan. He was criticized by many for his comments, and
the Lok Sabha Speaker called his comments "unacceptable."
Apart from these controversies, Azam Khan has also been accused of using his political
influence to get favors for his family and friends. He has also been accused of
corruption and misuse of power.
